Many believe the adage, “There is no perfect job.” If your list of “musts” for a career in vascular surgery includes working with a completely unique patient population with unparalleled opportunities for career development, the VA (Department of Veteran Affairs) healthcare system may offer the perfect job for you. These opportunities are best illustrated by the reflections below of early-, mid- and late-career VA vascular surgeons.

The deadline is March 1 for nominating a fellow SVS member for the society’s Lifetime Achievement Award or Medal for Innovation in Vascular Surgery, and for applications for the Distinguished Fellow Designation.

All will be recognized at the Vascular Annual Meeting in June.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual’s outstanding and sustained contributions to both the vascular surgery profession and to the SVS, as well as exemplary professional practice and leadership.

Applications for the SVS Foundation’s Clinical Research Seed Grant program are due March 1.

This program is designed to spur interest and development of clinical investigators among SVS members, particularly junior members with limited prior experience as principal investigators. 

The grant provides direct support for pilot projects with the potential to become larger studies funded from either industry or government sources. 

One awardee will be selected in the spring and will receive a $25,000 grant for direct costs for one year.

A registry to track management of new patients who are being treated medically for a number of vascular diseases has been launched by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Patient Safety Organization® and the Society for Vascular Medicine, in collaboration with the American Heart Association, for the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI).

The VQI, a joint venture of M2S Inc. and the SVS, collects and analyzes data in order to help improve the quality of vascular care.

The biology of vascular disease—including molecular mechanisms and the immune system—will take center stage on May 4 in Chicago at the 2020 Vascular Research Initiatives Conference (VRIC) meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS).

The conference, VRIC Chicago 2020: “From Discovery to Translation,” will be at the Hilton Chicago in Chicago.

ROSEMONT, Illinois, January 27, 2020 – The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) and Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) are releasing new Reporting Standards to ensure patients with Type B aortic dissections (TBAD) receive appropriate treatment and care.

The care of patients with Type B dissections has evolved over time and now includes medical, surgical and endovascular therapies, often in a multidisciplinary environment, and performed by several specialties, including vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, interventional radiology and cardiology.

Society for Vascular Surgery: Vascular Age can Determine Risk of Developing Vascular Disease  

ROSEMONT, Ill., Jan. 20, 2019 – Exercise is known to benefit just about any part of the body, including veins and arteries. A new study from researchers in the United Kingdom showed that first-time marathon runners reduced their “vascular age” by almost four years, reducing blood pressure and aortic stiffness and also resulting in a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke.

Chicago, IL/Washington, DC/Oakbrook Terrace, IL - The Society for Vascular Surgery Patient Safety Organization® (SVS PSO) and the Society for Vascular Medicine (SVM), in collaboration with the American Heart Association® (Association), have introduced the Vascular Medicine Consult Registry for the Vascular Quality Initiative. The Registry targets the management of new patients who are being treated medically for Atherosclerotic Carotid Artery Occlusive Disease, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, and Peripheral Lower Extremity Arterial Disease due to atherosclerosis or true aneurysm.
